1996年，是香港回歸中國之前的1年，是英格蘭主辦歐洲國家盃卻在4強互射12碼不敵德國無緣決賽的1年。在1996年，英國人David Baddiel及Frank Skinner合作，再加上indie band the Lightning Seeds，創作了名為《Three Lions》的歌曲，及後又被名為《Football is coming home》。

有別於一般的足球歌曲鬥志激昂，這首《Football is coming home》充滿著英國人的幽默及諷刺味道，每一次英格蘭踢歐洲國家盃或者世界盃總是被吹捧得天上有地下無，過後卻是一次又一次希望破滅。由1966年英格蘭主辦世界盃捧盃之後，等足30年面世的《Football is coming home》只是一個半自嘲的笑話，世界盃冠軍從來沒有回到過現代足球發源地英格蘭。然後，22年過去了，今次俄羅斯世界盃英格蘭似乎形勢大好，打入8強之後又讓瘋狂的英格蘭人跳出來唱《Football is coming home》。
